Kaohsiung Medical University¡¦s Home Parenteral Nutrition Training Center
"Asia-Pacific Certification Program" Officially Launched Today
Healthcare professionals from Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam participate in the training
¡@¡@As the world navigates the post-pandemic era and faces the growing challenge of an aging population and healthcare shortages, home healthcare has become increasingly important. Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital (referred to as KMUH) has been actively developing home parenteral nutrition (HPN) care and medical education. In 2023, KMUH, in partnership with Baxter Healthcare, established the first-ever Asia-Pacific Home Parenteral Nutrition Training Center in Taiwan. Today (19th July) , the center officially launched its "Asia-Pacific Training Program," with healthcare professionals from Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and other neighboring countries participating in the three-day training. The comprehensive program includes both theoretical education and hands-on clinical practice, helping participants learn how to properly guide patients and caregivers in using parenteral nutrition at home.
¡@¡@KMU Hospital superintendent, Dr. Jaw-Yuan Wang, mentioned that as the university-affiliated teaching hospital, KMUH has extensive experience in home parenteral nutrition and offers a complete educational model with a dedicated HPN care team. The hospital¡¦s "Warm Care, Empowered Support ¡V Integrated HPN Care Team" recently won the Gold Award in the Nursing Care Services category at the 2023 26th National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Awards, being recognized for achieving world-class quality standards.
¡@¡@In many Asia-Pacific countries, there is a lack of complete education and training for healthcare professionals in home parenteral nutrition. This training program is the first of its kind, and among the participants is Dr Cheung Yau Fung Eric, a consultant surgeon from Hong Kong¡¦s North District Hospital. Dr. Cheung
mentioned that clinical nutrition education is relatively lacking in Hong Kong, especially for addressing complex adult clinical nutrition issues, such as surgical treatment for upper gastrointestinal cancers. Through this three-day training in Taiwan, he hopes to gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to help establish a local HPN support service in Hong Kong.
