Division of Trauma Surgery

The Division of Trauma Surgery, Department of Surgery, in Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital provide primary to tertiary care of trauma patients in the Trauma Zone of our emergency department, serves about 15,000 patients annually. We also serve as visiting staffs in charge of our two surgical intensive care units (ICU) with high quality care to surgical critical patients, and as teaching staff in Post-Graduate Year (PGY) training in the General Surgical Medicine ward and Emergency Medicine resident training in emergency department (ED). With multidisciplinary, integrate team work combing emergency service, trauma team, invasive radiology, critical care, rehabilitation team and sub-acute ward and outpatient department, we provide seamless, holistic care of trauma patients. We have ten emergency bedS, six ambulatory care chair, one major trauma treatment room and one minor treatment room in ED, ten observation beds, twenty intensive care beds and thirty-five sub-acute care beds. Multiple or major trauma patients received in-time primary survey and life-support, team-approached aggressive and integrate urgent therapy, intensive and critical care, sub-acute care and rehabilitation through their course from the ED, ICU, ward, to the outpatient department.

All visiting staffs have board of specialty in Surgery, Trauma Surgery. All have board of Critical Care or Surgical Critical Care. Six also have board of specialty in Emergency Medicine. Four of our staffs serve as associated professor, one as lecturer, in faculty of Medicine, <st1:placetype w:st="on">College of Medicine, Kaohsiung <st1:placename w:st="on">Medical University. Besides the medical degrees, two of our staffs are Master in Health Care Administration, one is Master in Law, one is Master in Medical Ethics, and one is in Injury Prevention. We delicate not only to clinical service, but also to training of medical students and residents, and to clinical research, health care quality improvement, with continuous education of fellow trauma surgeons and nurses. Numbers of high-quality articles were published in high-rank journals annually, and we were also the reviewers in SCI journals and annual or academic meeting in each academy association of our specialty. We received high rank in student and resident teaching, contest of quality improvement, and official accreditation.

Beyond the in-hospital service, we also performed as active members in our emergent medical service system (EMSS) and academy association. Our staffs have been the executor or vice-executor of the Kaohsiung Emergency Operation Center (EMOC) for years and established databank and operational protocol for the EMSS. We provide basic life support (BLS) training to labors in factory or citizens, and on the job training for the emergency medical technicians (EMT). Our staffs also were members of various committees in each academy association of specialty, engaging in health care policy, specialist training and board certification, continuous education and regular activity. We are now doing hard works in establishing a real-time surveillance system and devoting for integrating and constructing a regional EMSS on-line surveillance application program. Our goal is to promote the performance of our regional EMSS and thus provide more convenient and effective, in-time service to all patients urging for emergency treatment.
