Department of Orthopaedics

The Department of Orthopaedics in Kaohsiung Medical University was founded by Professor Jun-Sheng Liao in 1954 and became first independent Orthopaedic Department in Taiwan after separated from the Surgery Department in 1963.

Our surgical team are capable to perform many international standard operations involving all orthopaedic field such as instrumental correction of spinal deformities, total joint prosthesis replacement, arthroscopic examination & surgery, microsurgery including digital and major limb replacement, ligament reconstruction and arthroplasty, bone lengthening and all kinds of fractures management.

In recent years, due to the aging of the population, degenerative arthritis & spine disease, osteoporotic fractures, and the sportive injuries are increased rapidly. Therefore, the staff of the Department of Orthopaedics is fastly expanded. There are currently 28 orthopaedic surgeons, and 8 residents. In order to improve the quality and efficiency of medical care, the Orthopaedic department was reorganized in October 2011, and was divided into three sections: adult reconstruction surgery, sports medicine & Orthopaedic trauma, and pediatric & spinal Orthopaedics.

After the department reorganized, the development is becoming more professional and organized in following items:

A. To expand the application of mini-invasive surgery: Integrated newly invented & developed surgical tools, visual navigation system, and arthroscopy skill, to lead the surgical technique to “mini-invasive” age.

B. To develop holistic health care: With rapidly increased number of geriatrics with co morbidities, KMUH will offer excellent care quality by combining all resources of every department.

C. To develop tissue engineering in clinical use: Cartilage and bone research teams have achieved many excellent results. In the future, these laboratory results will be translated into clinical use.

D. To setup Southern Taiwan Sports Medicine Center: Combined the staff of KMU’s Department of Sports Medicine and the Association of Southern Taiwan Sports to develop a professional training and medical center for excellent players.
