I. Summer Internship Department Introduction
The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in KMUH, with 22 attending physicians, is incharge of three outpatient clinics, a 72-bed inpatient ward, a 30-bed medical intensive care unit(MICU), a 12-bed respiratory care center (RCC), a pulmonary function lab, a pulmonary rehabilitationcenter, and a team of respiratory therapists. We diagnose and treat a wide range of pulmonary diseases,including lung cancer, airway diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary infection such aspneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis. Our critical care team serving the MICU is among the topcritical care teams in Taiwan. In collaborate with Department of Neurology, Department ofOtolaryngology, and Department of Dentist, we also care for patients with sleep-disordered breathing.Our recent research interests include clinical trials of lung cancer treatments, molecular mechanisms oflung cancer, molecular and genetic epidemiology of ARDS, and other clinical studies of criticalillnesses, airway diseases, interstitial lung diseases, and pulmonary infection.
II. Summer InternshipLearning Objective and Training Program Outline
When you finish this course, you would have excellent experiences on:
Image studies (chest X-ray and CT scan) of lung diseases
Pulmonary function test
Bronchoscopy、pleuroscopy、chest echo
Bedside techniques including thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, chest tube placement, andbronchoscopy-guided percutaneous dilational tracheostomy
Diagnosis and Treatment of common pulmonary diseases, including lung cancer, pulmonarytuberculosis, community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia, airway diseases such as asthmaand COPD
Management of critical illness, including sepsis/septic shock, acute respiratory failure, acuterespiratory distress syndrome, and mechanical ventilation
